Vengeance is of the Lord

Due to an assignment for the module GEK1022: Geopolitics of War and Peace, I had to watch a few movies that had geopolitical content.

Hence I chose to watch Munich and I was thankful that I watched it.

The film was about how the government leaders of Israel responded to the massacre of 11 of its Olympic Team in the German city of Munich in 1972 by Palestinian terrorists. It chronicled the series of events and actions the Mossad agents took to kill the initiators/planners for the terrorist operation. As they go about killing of the heads of the terrorist organization, these people slowly ended up being hunted and killed. 2 out of the 5-men team remained alive in the end, though they did not manage to kill all of their targets.

The film was fictionalized to an extent and was actually based on a book ‘Vengence: The True Story of an Israeli Anti-terrorist Team’. How true the book is will still remain a mystery as there are certain controversial issues.

But one lasting image on my mind was the psychological and morale toil the whole ‘vengeance’ operation took on the Israeli operatives. As they kill each target, it could be seen that they start to lose bits of their morality and humanity. One quote that rings through my head, “We are Jews, and we are supposed to be righteous.” This whole an eye for an eye operation did not portray the operatives to be any different from those terrorists who took the athletes hostage in Munich. Just because they stand on the ‘right’ side doesn’t make them any or more ‘righteous’ than the person standing on the other side.

Thus I came to a conclusion that mirrors what God has said in the Bible.

Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.
